Hello,

GrandForums.com was down for a number of hours today as you might have noticed.

This was because it was under a DDOS attack, which means a group of most likely hacked zombie computers were sending bogus requests to the server to try to use up all it's resources and crash it.

We've placed the server behind a Cisco Firewall now.

Please note your hosting accounts were unaffected as we store them elsewhere.

We are guessing the reason for this attack was because the hackers (or should we say, people that can read instructions) failed to find a way to hack the forum and resorted to a brute force DDOS attack.

The Firewall will now detect DDOS behavior and block it soon after it starts.

Similar to someone wanting to tow a Truck across the Alps themselves - in terms of difficulty.

We should be OK smile.gif

Hm, was the ip of the hackers blocked? If it was, that means it was sent by an individual computer.

Hello,

GrandForums.com was down for a day or so due since yesterday due to the DDOS attack again.

We noticed a short time ago and have restarted it.

We have been examining logs and blocking the IPs in the firewall now that were taking part in the attack. When it comes to these type of attacks, it usually means defense a while After it starts. In this case as someone told us.

As always, your hosting accounts are stored completely separately and were up and running without problems.

Ddos Stands for Denial of Service Attack.

QUOTE
In computer security, a denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. Typically the targets are high-profile web servers, and the attack attempts to make the hosted web pages unavailable on the Internet. It is a computer crime that violates the Internet proper use policy as indicated by the Internet Architecture Board (IAB).

Ahplace.com was hacked also, so bad that they have decided to close their doors!
Firefox
It was the moral bashing that caused the owner to close AHPlace. DDOS's have that affect unless your a DDOS attack veteran that deals with it often.
