Ive tried linux... I don't suggest it. A lot of programs wont work on it. One thing is its virus free, and comes with some cool default programs.

Some good tuts would be here, http://www.linuxforums.org/.

Id definately recommend trying it out. It all depends on your level of experience when using linux. Too many people try to run the more advanced flavors of linux like gentoo, slackware, redhat etc... and they get frustrated, give up and then flame it.

Id recommend knoppix to get your feet wet. Its a live distro with a ton of cool stuff and you dont have to install it, just burn it and boot the cd. Excellent hardware detection and full desktop manager (KDE 3.4 i think in the 5.0 knoppix) so you can just jump right in and start playing.

Once you've outgrown that, id say cent-os or fedora core 6 would be good, then gentoo when your better at linux. Gentoo is much more advanced but gives you full control and efficient optimization of your computer because it allows you to easily compile all the programs for your specific needs and architecture.

The install is a bit crazy though and can take up to nearly 2 days tongue.gif

Yeah I agree... Linus isn't very user friendly.

If you read about how to use it, it shouldn't be to hard to get used to.

You could just search up on wikipedia or just google for linux tutorials, and then it becomes pretty easy.

I've used linux sarge at my tafe its ohright i would say the kde looks awesome from my point of view but if you try to install packages you better get ur gun ready lol

The console was quite challenging to use at the start there are similarities between the linux console and the dos one but its just some minor similarities.

In my opinion linux ain't that bad even though there is quite a huge learning curve if you jump from windows to it but i guess it depends on the linux type you use and there are heaps around these days.

Vista has even less support than Linux, plus it's slower. I think that microsoft ending the distribution of XP is going to result in Linux taking the place of Windows.

Also, for anyone who used a multiuser system in the 70's and 80's, Linux is going to be easier than Windows, since they are used to POSIX/UNIX systems.

Btw i forgot to mention Knoppix is awesome all you do is download it from their site burn the ISO/Bootable image onto a normal CD-R and you can boot the O/S directly from the CD biggrin.gif

It's good if you want to surf around the net safely or just wanna give Linux a try before completely installing it smile.gif

Nah, the public don't know about linux.

If your looking for an easy, simple to use installation go for ubuntu (google it). It's very user friendly and has a great number of people helping out in there IRC support.

If your looking for something better, take a look at the links here. Your computer's crashing? before wiping the whole thing, try reinstalling windows. If that dosn't work, it may be a piece of hardwere. So try Ubuntu or Knoppix out on a disk before you install one.

kubuntu is better for me because it have KDE not gnome.

Suse is the best operating system for me, i tried 100 other distros but suse automatically installed my hardware (modem did not work on any other distro) and i menage to install nvidia driver for the very first time on Suse linux
