There is a problem beginning to grow with this debate section. People looking for posts hop in and give a quick blurb about their side of things and leave. If this continues, the debate section shall die.

One cannot have a debate if all anyone ever does is state their claim. A debate is only reached when someone's claim is calmly discussed amongst individuals based upon validity, fact, logic, and morals. In order for this to happen, one who is entering into a debate after it has been well underway needs to inform themselves as to what the claims are that have been made so far, and what the current state of the debate is. If someone comes in late and re-states a claim that is already been refuted, they are merely clogging the way for debate and not allowing the debate to flow on, effectively killing it.

What am I saying, you ask? If you're going to post in a debate topic, read the topic. Yes, the entire topic. You're a little fish in a big pond, someone else already said your claim.

I guess, me too, I want to take debate in school next year, but my school's debate team is crappy, they just sit there and talk, doing nothing!

Isn't that what debating is?

No, they just talk about basic stuff, like "When is he going out with you?" or non debating talking!

Firefox agrees, but he won't do anything until he feels as if the debate section has picked up enough steam.

I agree with you Death Dark, but I also see where FireFox is coming from. Maybe he should send messages to people who don't debate right, that way they can be told how to do it right, but not driven off smile.gif

I think their post should be deleted, and then they should receive a message telling them what they did wrong.

All in good time, though. Some people may not know proper forum behavior (as I was when I first came here), so it could take some getting used to (though I did read through the entire topic from the beginning).

By the way, a little off topic, but I notice you're 11 posts from pro, Javayahtzee. Keep up the posting!

I'm gonna debate your debate on debating!!
Personally i think the only wrong way to debate is to just say one line opinion with no reason why. It's the reason why that should do it.

As to deleting posts/ informing users, well i think that's only fair if the person has done it on many occasions and is just trying to get forum posts. Otherwise, isn't the whole point to let people say what they want to say!

Also, as to reading the whole thing, ok for some topics, but for a topic 5 pages or so long, it can be a bit much to read it all! And anyway, if more than one person says the same thing, what's wrong with that, just strengthens that point of view i reckon. It doesn't really ruin the debate. Anyway, debates always go round in circles, that's half the fun of debates!!

So i reckon people should be allowed to post what they think, regardless as to whether it has already been stated by someone else, as long as they just write a bit about WHY they have that opinion!

Most of the posts that I have a problem with are the posts that do this.

If everyone in these forums came around and just said whatever once in one topic, we'd have a topic of over 1000 posts of unrelated stuff. It's not so much about one person doing it over and over, but everyone doing it over and over because no one stops them.

I understand that it may be a lot to read, but even for the sake of your own arguement it pays to be informed of the topic so far. If you say thing X, and thing X has been fully refuted already, then, yes, you are ruining the topic because the point has to be refuted again. A debate between intellectuals never goes around in circles, because they always keep in mind the prior parts of conversations, and no one decides to discuss something that's already been discussed. And, again, this is not the "Poll Section," where we can all come and post about our opinion and leave it alone, this is the "Debate Section," where you should be forced to support and defend your views.

It just doesn't work that way. As I just said, a list of opinions is NOT a debate.
