advertise your self like on alot of forums and like do adsense and save money up so you buy hits (basicly)

Go to really popular forums (with like page rank 1) and get LOTS of posts and then post the links in your sig. The more links you have the better page ranking you will have and that will put you on the first link when you search it

Check your traffic and page rank by dnscoop. Then get suggestions and it offer some links of directory. Let your link inserting in directory list.

Word of mouth is the best, but if you are selling stuff consider google ad sense as well, quite cheep and can give a lot of new heads to your product.

Yep, posting in forums is a great way to get your site noticed, though better just to put it in your signature. You can also try out things like free traffic exchanges. Link referral is a great site which is a free way to get visitors. It's a massive directory of sites in different categories. You can list your site and start getting traffic straight away sometimes. You get higher up the lists by doing different tasks, like viewing other people's websites, submitting GOOD reviews and posting in their forum. I've done quite well on link referral and it can be a good starting point. The reviews people make about your own site can also be very useful!

I have used google adsense but if you search google for ads for your website you should get something.
