I'm sure the majority of Americans on here by now have noticed several languages on things we buy now, from insignificant things like playing cards and children's toys, to instruction manuals and games, and sometimes (a bit rarer around here) food. So do you think we should have all of these languages (mostly Spanish) on our products to cater to people who don't speak English? Personally, I don't think we should, since no other country would bend to us just because we don't speak <insert language here>

What do you think?

Is it a rule companies have to follow or is it up to them?

If its up to them, they are using it to increase sales to non english speakers.

It isn't a rule, no. But really, going as far as offering drivers tests in Spanish is really much, especially since you aren't going to go anywhere on the road and have the luxury of Spanish signs. It's almost an issue that can be tied in with illegal immigration, since when you consider that immigrants who come here legally have learned English. Considering the states where this is most prominent, (southwestern) it's almost like we're catering to people who are here illegally.

companies will have other languages on the products, especially in the us, because there are lots of spanish speaking people in the us

I think it's silly to put other languages on products.
If people want to come to our country they should learn english.
If I go to another non-english speaking country I expect to have to learn the language.
I also expect the same of those coming to mine.

Wow you guys are missing it. As everyone knows, U.S. is a melting pot of pretty much every single country in the world (except maybe North Korea, lol). There are so many languages spoken here and so many people who don't speak English that it is almost necessary to put different languages on things. So you expect people here to either learn English, find someone to live with who speaks English who can translate for them, or import everything from other countries?

The point is this. We ARE a melting pot, but we are supposed to melt down to AMERICANS. And Americans speak English!
It's really crippling people to put labels on stuff in different languages. It gives them a crutch so they don't have to learn English. But to function as good citizens in the US you really need to know English wink.gif

America is no longer a melting pot. All the major migrations are over with, and the land is done. We have melted and re-solidified into some sort of weak metal that we call American.

Whereas the US has no official language, somehow its official second language is Spanish. This infuriates me simply because that the fact that there are so many illegal immigrants in this country that our own black population is now a minority amongst minorities! I have nothing against these people, but the fact that they have ENTERED THE COUNTRY ILLEGALLY is what really ticks me off. Everyone else has had to follow customs and laws. Don't like it? Tough, go make something of Mexico. This isn't the first time that a mass migration has happened to this country however, The Germans, the Irish, and the Chinese have done it before. But, guess what? They all did it LEGALLY. As a side note, the last major migration was denied. Hitler offered to send all of the German Jews to America in Luxury Cruise Liners, but we wouldn't take them due to our immigration policies.

As for the languages on products, knock yourselves out. It's the company's money, and they can spend it however they wish. And just so you know, those instruction manuals that come in 3-9 different languages are there because those businesses ship the same ones overseas.

And as for speaking English: If you want to speak English, go to England, they do it all the time there. If you want to speak American, feel free to do so.

Death Dark pretty much said it but just to underline it... American isn't exactly a nationality. Our government/media speaks English because back when we had to "choose" a language, we were all pretty much from Great Britain. Now it's so complicated that if you pick some random guy on the street and someone find out his exact ancestry it will be like, "31% Irish, 12% Polish, 49% German, 6% French, 1% Italian, 1% Greek." The point is, there are too many different people here to limit everything to just English.

Most of this started with the growth of "American Exceptional ism." This is the thought process that America is the greatest county ever, and everything about it is the best.

This ideal has not died. If anything, it has grown stronger. However much I hate the idea, though, it seems like more and more English/American is an international language. Allegedly in the end times we will have one nation, one money, one language. I say that English/American will be our language, the Euro our currency, and some sort of UN like structure as our government.

Yes, but you do know that Chinese is currently the most spoken language in the world right?

I highly doubt we will become one nation, it's utterly impossible.

Yes, all the countries could never become one. There are many different types of ideas around in this world, and even if we were one country it would really solve anything.
