Sorry if I'm not speaking in your terms and I don't give enough details, but I'll try the best I can.

1. Go to http://www.skype.com/ and download the program. Save it to your desktop.
2. Double click to run the program and follow the instructions in the window. They are self-explanatory. Just leave it at the defaults unless you want something else and you are an advanced user.
3. Start Skype by going to Start > All programs > Skype
4. It will open a window that will give you instructions on how to make a free account with them. Follow it.
5. Once you're logged in, you can just type a phone number in the US and Canada at the bottom and click the green button. You're connected!

I just found out that this will only last until the end of 2006. After that, you have to buy credits to call people.

I already have it, yes you have to buy credits but it is a lot cheaper than using your telephone for international calls

That's interesting idea. Google has their own alternative, called Google Talk.
It's free but you can only talk to people who also have Gmail accounts.
